Layering with Acrylics

Layering is one of the greatest strengths of acrylic paint. Because acrylics dry quickly, artists can build complexity and depth efficiently when layering is done correctly.

Start with Thin Layers

Early layers should be thin and diluted slightly with water or medium. These layers establish composition and colour relationships without overwhelming the surface.

Allow Layers to Dry

Applying new paint over wet acrylic can cause lifting and muddy colour. Always allow layers to dry fully before adding new ones.

Building Depth

Later layers can be thicker and more opaque. Highlights, details, and focal points are typically added last.

Glazing Techniques

Glazing involves applying thin, transparent layers over dry paint to adjust colour and tone. This adds richness and depth without covering underlying detail.

Proper layering improves clarity, control, and durability in acrylic painting.
