Fixative Spray: What It Is and When to Use It

Fixative spray is used to protect dry drawing and pastel work from smudging and damage. It is commonly applied to charcoal, graphite, and pastel artworks.

What Fixative Does

Fixative creates a thin protective layer that stabilises loose pigment. It helps prevent smearing while preserving the appearance of the artwork.

Types of Fixative

  • Workable fixative allows additional layers to be added
  • Final fixative seals the artwork permanently

How to Apply Fixative

Always apply fixative in a well-ventilated area. Hold the spray at a distance and apply light, even coats. Avoid overspraying, which can darken or alter colours.

When Not to Use Fixative

Fixative is not recommended for wet paint and should be tested on scrap material before use.

Used correctly, fixative protects artwork without compromising quality.
