Gesso is a primer used to prepare surfaces for painting. Applying it correctly improves paint adhesion, prevents surface damage, and gives you control over texture and absorbency. While many ready-made canvases come pre-primed, applying gesso properly can significantly improve the quality and longevity of your artwork.
Gesso seals porous surfaces such as canvas, wood, and paper. Without it, paint can soak into the surface, causing dull colours, uneven application, and long-term deterioration. Gesso creates a stable base that allows paint to sit on top of the surface rather than being absorbed into it.
Gesso can be tinted by mixing in a small amount of acrylic paint. Tinted gesso reduces glare from a white surface and can influence the overall mood of a painting. Many artists use grey or warm-toned gesso as a starting ground.
Proper gesso application may feel like an extra step, but it dramatically improves paint handling, colour vibrancy, and the durability of your artwork. Taking the time to prepare your surface correctly sets the foundation for better results at every stage of painting.
