How to Clean Brushes Without Damaging Them

Cleaning your brushes correctly ensures they last longer and perform at their best. Here’s how to clean brushes after using water-based paints like acrylics and tempera.

🧼 Rinse Immediately After Use

Never let paint dry on your brush. Rinse under lukewarm water as soon as you’re finished.

🧴 Use Mild Soap

Add a few drops of dish soap or brush cleaner into your palm. Swirl the brush gently in circular motions.

🚿 Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse the soap out completely until the water runs clear. Repeat if necessary.

🧽 Reshape & Dry

Gently reshape the bristles and lay the brush flat or hang it upside down to dry — never standing upright in a jar.

🚫 Avoid These Mistakes

  • Don’t use hot water (it can loosen the glue)
  • Don’t soak for long periods
  • Don’t store brushes tip-down while wet
