What Type of Hair is Best for Acrylic Paint?
When it comes to brush hair, you have two options: natural and synthetic. Most of Princeton’s brushes are high-quality synthetic. The hair type, blend, and construction of the brush will determine what the brush is best used for. High-quality hair can enable the brush to have a larger colour-holding capacity and maintain its shape better, which is what you want when painting with acrylics.
Synthetic Hair: Synthetic hair filaments are created from man-made fibres, such as PBT resin. They are durable, affordable, cruelty-free, offer consistent performance, hold a lot of colour, and retain their shape with heavy-bodied paints. The diameter of a synthetic filament and the blend of different filaments affect how soft or stiff a brush is and how the brush performs with various media.
Natural Hair (Bristle): Acrylic painting brushes made of natural hair are most often created with hog bristles. They offer firmness, strength, control, texture, and flexibility (especially with heavy-bodied paints). The flagged (split) tips help hold generous amounts of acrylic, releasing it evenly for bold, textured strokes. However, they are pricier.
Aspen brushes: Available in long and short handles, they feature synthetic bristles designed to mimic the stiffness of natural bristles. They retain their shape after extensive use, enabling smooth and even paint release for acrylic artists. Unlike natural bristles, these brush fibres stay together regardless of the amount of pressure applied or the painting surface used. Plus, their non-glare ferrules make them ideal for plein air (outdoor) painting.
Catalyst Polytip brushes: Created with NextGen synthetic fibres with split (flagged) tips to mimic natural bristle. The split hair fibres (two to three tips per hair) provide increased capacity to hold paint and a smooth application. They are considered one of our best brushes by acrylic painters and are available in both long and short handles.
Summit Series (6100): Features long handles and high-quality white synthetic bristles that offer a resilient and controlled painting experience. They have soft flexibility that is perfect for low to medium viscosity paint to help with blending and smoothing. The synthetic fibres maintain sharp edges and points so you can paint with precision. This range is a core range.
Velvetouch brushes: Feature a luxurious synthetic blend tailored to performance with acrylic paints as well as oil, watercolour, and gouache. The fibres are uniquely crafted per shape to optimise handling, precision, snap, and shape retention. They are great for smooth blending and detail work.
The Select Artiste line: Offers a broad selection of synthetic brushes — 29 shapes and 108 individual pieces — suitable for acrylic artists and all mediums. You’ll find many shapes from rounds and filberts to speciality shapes.
The Refine series: Uses interlocked Chungking natural bristle with flagged tips for excellent control, precision, paint retention, and shape maintenance. Available in a wide range of shapes and sizes for all your painting needs.
