Rolfes Goat Hair Brush – Series 669

The Rolfes Series 669 Goat Hair Round Brush is made with soft natural goat hair formed into a traditional round, pointed brush head and fitted to a natural wooden handle. The softness and flexibility of goat hair give this series a very different painting character from firmer hog-bristle brushes, making it particularly suitable for fluid colour and techniques where smooth application and good liquid-holding capacity are important.

Natural goat hair is capable of holding a generous amount of water, ink or diluted colour, allowing the artist to produce flowing, continuous strokes and washes without repeatedly returning to the palette. The soft hairs release colour smoothly across the painting surface and are useful for washes, glazing, blending and softly transitioning one area of colour into another.

The round shape adds considerable versatility. The fuller body carries colour, while the shaped tip can be used for controlled strokes, lines, smaller details and expressive mark-making. Changes in pressure allow the artist to move between finer marks and broader strokes within the same brush.

The Series 669 is particularly well suited to watercolour, gouache and inks, as well as other fluid or diluted water-based paints. Its soft hair is also useful where a gentle brush is required for blending or glazing without aggressively disturbing the layer beneath.
The natural wooden handle provides comfortable reach and allows the brush to be held at different points along the handle according to the degree of control or freedom of movement required.

After use, rinse the brush thoroughly using the cleaning method appropriate to the medium. Gently reshape the round tip and allow the brush to dry before storage. Avoid leaving natural-hair brushes standing in water, as this can distort the hair and damage the brush over time.
