Rolfes Squirrel Hair Brush – Series 99864, Round, Size 8

The Rolfes Series 99864 Squirrel Hair Brushes combine soft natural squirrel hair with a traditional round brush shape and a black long handle. Squirrel hair is highly valued by watercolour artists for its softness, absorbency and exceptional ability to hold water and diluted colour.

The full round brush head acts as a generous reservoir, allowing the brush to carry substantial amounts of colour for washes, glazing and long, flowing strokes. The soft hairs release colour smoothly and respond sensitively to changes in pressure, making the brush particularly effective for blending, soft transitions and expressive wet painting techniques.

Although squirrel hair is considerably softer and has less spring than firmer natural hairs or synthetic fibres, this softness is one of its principal advantages. It allows colour to be applied gently and helps minimise disturbance of underlying washes and delicate painted surfaces.

The rounded body tapers towards the tip, giving the artist a useful combination of colour-carrying capacity and control. Depending on the amount of pressure applied, the brush can move from broader, fluid marks to narrower strokes and more selective applications of colour.

Series 99864 is particularly suited to watercolour, gouache and inks, as well as other fluid water-based media where absorbency and smooth colour release are important.
The black long handle provides comfortable reach and allows the brush to be held closer to the ferrule for controlled application or further back for looser, more expressive brushwork.

Available in Sizes 8, 10 and 12, allowing the artist to choose the degree of colour capacity and coverage appropriate to the work.

After use, rinse the brush thoroughly using the method appropriate to the medium. Gently reshape the hairs and allow the brush to dry before storage. Avoid leaving natural squirrel-hair brushes standing in water.
