Rolfes White Bristle Brush – Series 1368, Stencil Brush, Size 4

The Rolfes Series 1368 White Bristle Stencil Brushes are purpose-designed for stencilling and decorative painting. Made with firm natural white hog bristles, each brush has a short, blunt working end that provides the resistance and control required for applying colour through stencil openings.

Unlike a conventional flat or round painting brush, a stencil brush is designed to work particularly well with a vertical dabbing or stippling action, or with controlled circular movements. The firm bristles allow colour to be worked gradually onto the surface, helping the artist control paint application and build colour, shading and texture.

The brushes can be used for scumbling, dry brushing, blending, shading, distressed finishes and other textural effects. The short hog bristles are also particularly well suited to dry-brush techniques and textural effects. By working with relatively little paint, the brush can produce subtle colour, distressed effects, shading and softly blended transitions. The bristles can manipulate thicker paint effectively while their blunt working surface distributes colour across the area being worked. This makes the Series 1368 useful beyond traditional stencilling for decorative painting, crafts and other surface-design techniques.

The Series 1368 is suitable for a broad range of painting media, including acrylic, oil, alkyd, tempera, poster, craft and stencil paints. With oils and alkyds, the firm hog bristles are particularly useful for stippling, scumbling, dabbing and working controlled amounts of colour into the surface. With acrylic and other water-based paints, they are equally useful for traditional stencil work, decorative painting and textured effects.

The natural wooden short handle provides a comfortable grip close to the working surface, giving good control during repeated stippling, dabbing and circular brush movements. Smaller sizes are well suited to detailed stencil openings and precise applications, while the larger brushes provide increased coverage for broader motifs and decorative areas.

For clean stencil work, use a relatively small amount of paint and remove excess colour from the brush before applying it through the stencil. This helps build colour gradually and reduces the risk of paint spreading underneath the stencil edge.

After use, clean the brush promptly using the method appropriate to the medium. Reshape the bristles and allow the brush to dry thoroughly before storage.
