The Rolfes Series 646 Fan Brushes are made with firm white hog bristles shaped into a distinctive spread fan. The natural bristles provide good spring and control while allowing the tips to separate naturally, making them particularly effective for creating soft, varied marks and textured effects.
Ideal for blending and feathering colour, softening edges, creating subtle transitions, and painting foliage, grasses, hair, fur and other organic textures. The Series 646 can be used with acrylics, oils, alkyds, gouache, tempera, poster and craft paints, and can also be used with watercolour for specialised textural, lifting and dry-brush effects.
Available in a range of sizes to suit everything from fine textural detail to broader blending and foliage effects.
The Series 646 is particularly useful for blending and feathering colour, softening hard edges and creating gradual transitions. Used with a lighter touch, the individual bristle tips can create convincing foliage, grasses, trees, hair, fur and other natural or organic textures. The brush can also be used for dry-brush techniques, stippled effects and adding subtle surface texture without completely blending underlying colours together.
The firm hog bristles make these brushes particularly well suited to acrylic, oil and alkyd paints, where they can manipulate heavier-bodied colour effectively. They can also be used with gouache, tempera, poster and craft paints. With watercolour, the firmer fan is useful for more specialised techniques such as dry-brush texture, foliage, grasses, lifting colour and breaking up edges, rather than traditional washes.
Available in a range of sizes, the Series 646 allows the artist to choose a smaller fan for more controlled textural work or a larger fan for broader blending, foliage and expressive effects.
After painting, clean the brush promptly using the appropriate method for the medium used. Gently reshape the fan and allow the bristles to dry thoroughly before storage.
