Rolfes Squirrel Hair Brush – Series 256, Round, Size 10

The Rolfes Series 256 Squirrel Hair Round Brushes combine soft natural squirrel hair with a traditional round brush shape and natural wooden long handles. Squirrel hair is highly valued for its softness, flexibility and excellent water and colour-holding capacity, making these brushes particularly effective for fluid painting techniques.

The full body of the round brush acts as a reservoir, carrying a generous amount of water or diluted colour and releasing it smoothly onto the painting surface. This makes the Series 256 particularly useful for washes, glazing, blending, soft transitions and long, flowing strokes.

The hair tapers towards the tip, providing greater control than the full body of the brush might suggest. By varying the angle and pressure, the artist can move between broader applications of colour and narrower strokes, controlled marks and finer details.
Squirrel hair is considerably softer and less springy than hog bristle or many synthetic fibres. This gentle response makes it especially useful for watercolour and other fluid media, where smooth colour release and the ability to work over delicate washes without aggressively disturbing the underlying layer are important.

Series 256 is particularly suited to watercolour, gouache and inks, as well as other fluid water-based media. The natural wooden long handle provides comfortable reach and can be held closer to the ferrule for increased control or further back for freer, more expressive brushwork.

Available in Sizes 4, 6, 10 and 12, providing a choice from more controlled applications and smaller areas through to brushes with greater water and colour capacity for broader washes and expressive work.
After use, rinse thoroughly using the cleaning method appropriate to the medium. Gently reshape the round tip and allow the brush to dry before storage. Avoid leaving natural squirrel-hair brushes standing in water.
