The Rolfes Series 579 is a traditional flat brush made with firm natural white hog bristles and a long natural wooden handle. The resilient bristles provide good spring and control, while the flat shape is ideal for laying down confident strokes, blocking in colour, covering larger areas and creating defined edges.
The long handle provides greater reach and allows the artist to work further back from the painting surface, making the Series 579 particularly suitable for easel painting and expressive brushwork. A versatile brush for acrylics, oils and alkyds, it can also be used with a range of other painting media.
The Rolfes Series 579 White Bristle Brush is a traditional long-handled flat artist’s brush made with firm natural white hog bristles. Combining the resilience and spring of hog bristle with a long natural wooden handle, it is designed for controlled as well as expressive painting techniques.
The flat brush head is one of the most versatile shapes in an artist’s brush collection. Used on its broad face, it can lay down strong strokes of colour, block in shapes and cover larger areas efficiently. Turned onto its narrower edge, the same brush can produce more defined strokes, edges and linear marks. The firm hog bristles can also leave visible brush marks and texture, allowing the character of the brushwork to become part of the painting.
The long handle provides additional reach and allows the brush to be held further from the painting surface, particularly useful when working at an easel. Holding the brush further back also permits freer movement of the hand and arm, making it well suited to loose, gestural and expressive painting.
Natural hog bristle performs particularly well with oils, alkyds and acrylics, where its strength and spring help move and manipulate heavier-bodied paint. The Series 579 can also be used with gouache, tempera, poster and craft paints, as well as for selected dry-brush and textural techniques with watercolour.
Each brush is individually specified by its hair width and hair length (out), providing the actual working dimensions of the bristle head and helping artists select the most appropriate brush for their work.
After painting, clean the brush promptly using the appropriate method for the medium used. Reshape the bristles and allow the brush to dry thoroughly before storage.
